Why Parties 'Emphasize' Instead Of Move

European Politics subfield banner

Policy shifts often seem linked to opinion changes, but parties also alter perceptions through emphasis-based adjustments. This study introduces a new model analyzing party manifestos, finding that leader-dominated parties favor direct opinion change or systemic reactions. Activist-led groups tend toward emphasis-based responses to external shifts. By connecting salience models with spatial approaches, this research offers fresh insights into how parties strategically position themselves.
