This paper introduces a new dataset detailing individual professional backgrounds of state legislators across 98 chambers between 1993 and 2012. Analyzing trends in these backgrounds, the study examines both institutional factors (professionalism, legislative turnover) and individual ones (political party, gender). Key findings highlight:
District-Level Factors & Elections: Examines how demographic and political district characteristics influence the likelihood of electing legislators from specific professional groups.
Occupational Backgrounds & Ideology: Identifies professional profiles most associated with moderate or extreme ideological positions within each major political party.
Leadership vs. Membership: Compares the occupational patterns of legislative leaders versus general members.
These analyses demonstrate how professional backgrounds shape representation and inform understanding of legislative behavior.
