New Analysis
This study constructs a One China identity scale, examining Taiwanese student delegations during their visits to Mainland China. The author draws on national identity theory and considers the CPC's political stance toward Taiwan.
Data & Methods
Using panel data from 271 Taiwanese students between 2016 and 2017, this research explores changes in their One China identity perceptions. Statistical analysis shows a significant increase (0.11 average points; +5.19%). The regression model explains nearly 11% of the total variance.
Key Findings
All three hypotheses are supported:
- Impression of Mainland China improved
- Acceptance of CPC's regime increased
- Preference for authoritarianism rose
Following exchanges, these students demonstrated stronger alignment with One China identity.
