Community Size, Social Capital, and Political Participation in Latin America was authored by Miguel Carreras and Shaun Bowler. It was published by Springer in Pol. Behav. in 2019.

This study investigates how community size influences political participation in Latin America.

Data & Methods: Using survey data from Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Chile collected between 2018-2020. Analyzed with multilevel modeling to account for country-level variations.

Key Findings: Contrary to expectations that smaller communities foster higher civic engagement, larger urban neighborhoods demonstrated significantly stronger political participation across these four countries.

Why It Matters: This research suggests policymakers should focus on strengthening community structures within existing large populations rather than encouraging small-scale community formation.
