How does host-country public opinion respond to the U.S. military presence? This study examines exposure across 14 countries using new cross-national survey data.
Findings: Contact with U.S. personnel or receipt of economic benefits correlated with stronger support for the military, its personnel, and government policies.
These results suggest that US military installations significantly shape host-nation social attitudes through direct interaction and mutual economic ties.
