Empathy Paradox: Study Finds It Can Intensify Political Polarization

Political Behavior subfield banner

New research reveals a surprising twist in empathy's role in politics. Higher levels of empathic concern are not just associated with polarization, they actively fuel it.

Beyond Comfort: Empathy often feels good toward our own group but can heighten animosity toward others.

* Empathic Concern: Compassion for one's side increases partisanship.

National Data & Experiments: Using a large sample and controlled studies, we demonstrate this effect clearly.

* Quantitative Analysis: Correlation between empathy and polarization is statistically significant.

* Experimental Design: High-empathy individuals show stronger bias in political judgments.

This finding challenges the assumption that empathy reduces conflict. It suggests that partisan divisions may be linked to elevated empathic feelings.
