Party Rivalry Ignites Grassroots Action? Exploring Their Surprising Connection

Does heightened party competition translate into more political activism?

New Question: This paper examines whether increased partisanship leads to higher civic engagement.

Researchers analyzed data from Argentina, Brazil, and the US collected via surveys and national election statistics during periods of intense vs. moderate partisan rivalry.

* 🔍 Findings: Higher competition correlates with significant increases in protest participation and voter turnout among youth.

* ⚠️ Contradiction: Yet, this boost does little to improve descriptive representation for marginalized groups.

Implications: The results suggest that while party contests energize citizens, they don't necessarily broaden democratic participation. This calls into question the trade-offs between electoral competition and inclusive governance models.
