Does women's representation influence democratic legitimacy? A survey experiment tested this with a U.S. sample.
Survey Experiment: We surveyed U.S. citizens using a nationally representative method to gauge perceptions of political decision-making bodies.
Women Equalize Representation: Our findings reveal that equal gender representation in legislative panels, regardless of their stance on women's issues, can enhance democratic legitimacy for decisions contrary to women's interests.
Gender Differences: This effect appears particularly strong among men. When women are equally represented, men often show increased support or trust for political processes and outcomes they disagree with.
Broader Impact: Beyond gender-specific issues, inclusive representation also improved perceptions of general decision-making legitimacy regardless of specific policy areas or outcomes.
