What are the bailout provisions of the Voting Rights Act?
Some states and local governments are subject to heightened enforcement provisions under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. However, a covered jurisdiction can bail out of these special requirements if it can prove it has conducted elections free from discrimination for a decade. In 2011, the City of Sandy Springs sought and obtained this relief from Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
