What is Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965?
Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act singles out Georgia and six other southern states for special scrutiny. States subject to Section 5 must pre-clear any changes to their election laws with the U.S. Department of Justice or D.C. District Court prior to holding elections under the modified laws. Initially scheduled to expire in 1970, this Act has been repeatedly renewed.
