What are special elections?
Elections at times different than regularly scheduled elections may become necessary to fill vacancies caused by death or resignation of an officeholder. Frequently, the Governor calls for a special election in which all candidates compete, regardless of party (without first holding party primaries), followed by a runoff if no candidate wins a majority vote share.
